Institutions

The Institutions section refers to the entities that produced, received, and/or conserved information on entails within the scope of their functioning, competences, and activities. For each one of the institutions, the following are presented: the chronological span of their activity, main regulatory documents, general competences and competences with regard to entails, the institutional structure, the roles of its agents in relation to entails, and relations with other institutions with respect to entails.

This section is divided into three subsections:
Crown
Entails were related to the royal institutions of grants and favours (mercê), registration, control, and verification: courts, chancelleries, provedorias, welfare institutions, and document registry institutions.

Church
Secondly, with the ecclesiastical institutions of control and registration, which accepted and regulated the pious obligations: secular and regular bodies and temples, confraternities, and the Roman Curia (through the nunciatures).

Entails
Finally, entails were in themselves norm-producing entities, both internal and relating to external entities; and they produced, managed, and preserved information.
